To introduce RUDRAGNI, we have to trace a few steps backward to the erstwhile “Sarada Nrityangan Dance School” which paved the way for ‘Rudragni’
As per ‘Purana’, the Indian classical dance form originated from Lord Shiva’s manifestations of joy and anger. While ‘Ananda Tandava’ reflects the milder and joyous mood, ‘Tandava Nritya’ brings out the ‘Rudra Roop’, a form that ignites a ‘Fire of Passion’. This ‘Fire of Passion’ is called ‘Rudragni’.
Rudragni Creative & Classical Dance Academy was established in 2010 with the initiative of four dance enthusiasts. There were numerous obstacles on the way, the most difficult being the untimely demise of Rudragni’s principal mentor, Sri Pranab Bhattacharya, within two-and-a-half years of its formation. It took three years to deal with this setback. But Rudragni finally managed to move on with sheer determination and continued to excel at its own pace.
Rudragni’s creation had a particular objective. We felt that there was an absence of space and environment for today’s children and teenagers to express themselves. Moreover, in the pursuit of so-called success, they are perhaps losing their identity, culture, and even language. Rudragni wanted to provide a platform for the young ones, especially girls, to develop their skills and thought processes through performing art, and eventually feel good about the experience. Initially, we had 'dance' in our minds. We wanted to use ‘dance’ as a therapeutic medium for expression and self-development. Besides conventional education, it is essential for the reason to be able to think, apply logic, experiment, and make decisions. As a learning process, Rudragni Creative & Classical Dance Academy aims to imbibe values among aspiring dancers and create avenues for them to express themselves with dignity. At the end of the day, our success lies in their happy and content faces. We treat each of them, irrespective of their age group, as our own children.
Slowly and gradually, Rudragni has reached its tenth year. Within this short span of time, the roots of our efforts have reached deep; it is visible in the successful accomplishments of our students in various competitions. In addition to this, the group's performances on various occasions are being appreciated by gurus and established artists of the dance world.
Rudragni started as an institution for classical dance, mainly Bharatnatyam and Odissi. Over the years it included the Creative and Contemporary Dance forms and the Korean martial art form, Taekwondo in its curriculum, all under the able guidance of specialized and experienced teachers.
Our team works towards retaining the syntax of classical dance form while bringing in innovative ideas to create new rhythmic movements with grace. We are open to experimenting with new ideas and techniques in other areas of art and culture.
Besides regular classes, Rudragni also organizes workshops on Chhau, Contemporary dance and Taekwondo, costume and accessory design, make-up for dance recitals and dramas, and exercises on teamwork and coordination.
While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the everyday lifestyle of people across the globe, the virtual world came to the rescue. Without skipping a month, Rudragni dedicatedly conducted online classes as per schedule throughout the lockdown period. The institute also arranged virtual events on special occasions to keep the students motivated. The programs are available on Rudragni’s official YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/@Rudragnidance.
